Mac vs Windows for Business

Why ITogether Chooses Apple for Business: Security, Reliability, and Value

We’re often asked why we run our business primarily on Apple Mac devices rather than Windows PCs. It’s not about brand loyalty, it’s about practicality, performance, and security. After ten years of using Macs across our UK and New Zealand operations, the evidence is clear: they simply make more sense for a modern, secure, and efficient IT environment.

Reliability First

When we first made the switch, Windows operating system reliability was a daily frustration. Frequent patching, long update cycles, and system downtime were slowing our engineers down. With Macs, that problem vanished. We’ve never had an Apple device fail, and we’ve been running them continuously for a decade. For a business that provides 24/7 network monitoring and cyber security support, downtime isn’t an option.

Macs are built to last. In our experience, Mac devices last at least twice as long as their Windows counterparts, often three times. That means the total cost of ownership (TCO) is significantly lower over time, even if the upfront cost is higher.

Security by Design

Apple’s security pedigree has always been one of its strongest assets. Its closed ecosystem, tight app control, and hardware–software integration create a secure baseline that’s hard to match.

We do still use Windows servers hosted securely in dedicated UK datacentres, but they’re tightly controlled, updated, and ringfenced from the internet. Even our few Windows laptops are never connected to the web.

The result? A cleaner, safer environment with fewer attack surfaces and less time spent firefighting vulnerabilities.

Productivity and Ease of Use

Most of our team’s work is browser-based, so switching between platforms is effortless. Microsoft 365, Outlook, and Teams all run seamlessly on macOS. The user experience is intuitive, especially for staff already using iPhones, which is most of them. If you can use an iPhone, you can use a Mac.

Battery life is excellent, and performance is consistent even under heavy workloads. Engineers can focus on customer projects, not troubleshooting their laptops.

The Cost Equation

While Macs may seem more expensive, there’s no ongoing licence cost for the operating system. macOS updates are free forever, unlike Windows, which incurs upgrade and management costs over time.

Add in reduced downtime, lower support costs, and longer hardware lifespan, and it’s easy to see why accountants love the maths. When you do the numbers,

Macs win on both reliability and value.

Lessons for Business Leaders

Many organisations stick with Windows simply because “that’s what we’ve always used.” But at ITogether, we encourage our clients to challenge that mindset. The modern workplace demands secure, reliable, and user-friendly tools, not legacy decisions.

Before your next Windows upgrade, take a step back and benchmark your IT setup. You might be surprised by the potential savings, productivity gains, and security improvements available through alternative platforms.
